Getting Started

What is Runtype?

Runtype is an AI Product development platform that helps teams build production-ready AI applications. It bridges the gap between working prototypes and deployed Products by providing tools for building, testing, and deploying AI workflows.

Core capabilities

Runtype provides everything you need to go from idea to production:

  • Build AI workflows — Create multi-step Flows and Agents with 30+ step types including prompts, API calls, data transforms, and conditionals. Start with pre-built templates to move faster.

  • Deploy anywhere — Ship your AI capabilities through chat widgets, REST APIs, MCP for AI IDEs, or Agent-to-Agent interfaces

  • Test and evaluate — Compare models and prompts across test datasets with Evals to find the best configuration

  • Monitor and debug — Track execution logs, debug failures, and understand how your AI is performing

Who uses Runtype?

Runtype is built for developers, Product teams, startups, and agencies building AI-powered experiences. Whether you're adding AI to an existing Product or building something entirely new, Runtype provides the infrastructure you need. Create your account to get started.

Key concepts

Understanding these core concepts will help you get the most out of Runtype:

  • Flows — Multi-step AI workflows that chain together prompts, API calls, and logic

  • Agents — Agentic workflows with tool use and multi-step reasoning capabilities

  • Products — Containers that group your AI capabilities for deployment

  • Surfaces — Deployment channels like chat widgets, APIs, and MCP that expose your capabilities

  • Records — Structured data entries that provide context for Flow execution

  • Tools — Extensions that Agents can call to perform actions or retrieve data

  • Evals — Model comparison evaluations to test prompts and configurations

Platform vs. Bring Your Own Key

Runtype provides platform API keys so you can start building immediately—no provider accounts required. For higher-volume production use or if you prefer direct provider billing, you can optionally connect your own API keys (BYOK).
